Hair Loss Treatment Q & A

What is hair loss treatment?

Hair loss treatment refers to a group of medications and supplements that encourage the growth of thicker, healthier hair. These drugs are safe, well-tolerated, and proven to provide lasting results in both men and women.

What is hair loss?

Hair loss is a common problem that affects people of all ages. It can occur only on your scalp or over your entire body. Sometimes it’s hereditary; at other times, it occurs due to an underlying health condition.

Hair loss isn’t always a cause for concern, but it can negatively affect your confidence and self-esteem. If you’ve observed visible hair loss, and the condition doesn’t improve over time, make an appointment at Coastal Primary Care.

What causes hair loss?

Hair loss occurs for various reasons, including:

  • Genetics
  • Pregnancy and Childbirth
  • Menopause
  • Thyroid disease
  • Alopecia
  • Scalp infections
  • Certain medications
  • Severe Stress

You might also experience hair loss due to a nutritional deficiency. For example, your hair might start to thin if you’re anemic or lacking protein.

Is there any way to prevent hair loss?

Most hair loss occurs due to genetics, but there are things you can do to avoid other causes of hair loss. Dr. Rezai recommends protecting your hair from the sun’s UV rays, quitting smoking, and being gentle with your hair. For example, it’s a good idea to avoid harsh treatments like curling irons or hair straighteners.

What does hair loss treatment involve?

At Coastal Primary Care, hair loss treatment begins with a review of your medical history, a discussion of your symptoms and a focused physical exam. If you take any prescription medications or have any underlying health conditions, let Dr. Rezai know during this time.

Male Pattern Baldness status is assessed using the Hamilton-Norwood Scale.

Female Pattern Baldness is more generalized thinning, but most noticeable where the hair is parted. This is assessed using the Ludwig Scale.

Dr. Rezai may order blood work, urinalysis, and additional lab tests to rule out underlying health problems like nutritional deficiencies or a hormonal imbalance.

Once he pinpoints the source of your hair loss, Dr. Rezai makes recommendations for treatment. Often, that includes medication like minoxidil (Rogaine®) or finasteride (Propecia®). Minoxidil helps you regrow your hair slowly, while finasteride slows down hair loss. Dr. Rezai may also recommend that you take hair specific nutritional supplements, which are also available for purchase at Coastal Primary Care.
